Greater Richmond Area Community of Practice in Autism (CoPA)
What is a CoPA?
The purpose of a CoPA is to “share knowledge and information about evidence-based strategies in natural environments, focusing on infants, toddlers, and young children diagnosed or suspected of having Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and their families, to enhance supports and services in the Commonwealth of Virginia.” This means coming together and learning from one another so that we can better serve children with characteristics of ASD and their families.
To learn more about what's happening in other CoPAs and enjoy a variety of resources on working with infants and toddler with ASD and their families, please visit http://www.infantva.org/pr-ITC-CoPa.htm.
Action Plan This action plan describes goals and activities of the Region 1 CoPA developed during the initial meeting in March, 2009.

Have you Heard--Parent-Reported Autism Prevalence Rate???
10/5/09, George Jesien, Executive Director of the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD), sent the following message out to AUCD members about an article published in the American Academy of Pediatrics' Journal of Pediatrics about new data on parent-reported prevalence of ASD. National news agencies have also responded to this information and are highlighting the parent-reported autism prevalence rate of one in every 91 American children. Maureen Conroy, VCU, cautioned in an e-mail to the CoPA that the "data is preliminary...one encouraging word is that these preliminary findings have caught the federal administrations's attention and they will be putting 85 more million dollars into ASD research."
To AUCD network members,
An article entitled Prevalence of Parent-Reported Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder Among Children in the US, 2007 was published online today in the American Academy of Pediatrics’ journal Pediatrics(doi:10.1542/peds.2009-1522).
This study used data gathered as part of the 2007 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH), a national survey directed and funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). More than 78,000 parents of children aged 3 to 17 years were asked whether their child currently had an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis – including autistic disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS), or Asperger's Syndrome – or whether their child had been given that diagnosis in the past, but was no longer diagnosed with ASD.
Some key points in the study (Taken from e-mail blast sent out by AMCHP):
· Analysis was based on a sample size of 78,037 children aged 3-17 years from the 2007 National Survey of Children’s Health
· A child was considered to have autism if a parent/guardian reported that a doctor or other health care provider had ever said that the child had ASD or that the child currently had the condition
· The odds for boys having ASD were 4 times higher than for girls; Non-Hispanic-black and non-Hispanic multiracial children had lower odds of having ASD than non-Hispanic white children; and children living in the Midwest and Northeast had higher odds of having ASD than children living in the West
· Nearly 40% of children who had been diagnosed with ASD in the past were reported by parents/caregivers to not currently have the condition
· Children with current ASD had better access to care than children never diagnosed with ASD, however children with ASD had poorer perceived quality of care as indicated by lower odds of having received family-centered care and needed care coordination, or receiving care in a medical home
· The study calls for continual monitoring of ASD and further understanding of the groups at highest risk for being diagnosed with ASD and the factors associated with ASD symptoms, and health care impact that could lead to more effective interventions
The study found a parent-reported autism prevalence rate of one in every 91 American children, including one in 58 boys

Dawn Hendricks presented great information about parent implemented intervention and offered practical strategies for families, therapist, and practitioners to use. Now it's your turn. Take a few minutes to share some ways you are supporting families. Please remember not to use any identifying information if you are sharing specific examples. Thanks for your input.
